Dans la prose métrique latine, il arrive qu'une phrase courte faisant préface, et ensuite une phrase longue, ou bien au contraire une phrase longue d'abord, et ensuite une phrase courte faisant conclusion, composent ensemble une seule unité métrique. En pareil cas, la première des deux phrases sera suivie d'un point et virgule (ou bien d'un point d'interrogation ou d'exclamation suivi de minuscule), la seconde phrase sera suivie d'un point (ou bien d'un point d'inter rogation ou d'exclamation suivi de majuscule).
