Nevertheless, it is susceptible of a high polish, which makes a durable finish. Granite is probably the best stone for foundations, andis extensively used in other positions requiring great strength; it is also put to such minor uses as ?agging, thresholds, and water-tables. All kinds of granite are damaged considerably by the action of fire, which causes them to crack badly. They disintegrate at temperatures ranging from 900° to l,000° F. The average weight of granite is about 166 pounds per cubic foot. Granite is found in the eastern and western parts of. The United States and in Canada, the gray variety occurring principally in the New England States and Virginia, while the red variety, which is usually harder, is found near the Bay of Fundy, on the islands of the St. Lawrence River, in Virginia, near Lake Superior, in Maine, and in many parts of the Rocky Mountains.
