Excerpt from First German Reader
There is always need for new material of a simple kind for first German readings in high-school and college. It is hoped that this book will help those teachers who are dissatisfied with the German reader in use in their classes whether because its selections are too difficult for elementary reading, because they do not contain the vocabulary of everyday modern life, because they are too long, or because their themes are not such as interest the American student.
This book is written to meet present-day class conditions. The stories, interspersed with popular verses, are unvaryingly easy; they tell of things common to the home and school and play-life of the German youth of to-day; they are short, pithy, and told in colloquial language.
The author not only repeats many times the phrases that have been once used, but attempts to place them in novel and entertain ing surroundings, with the aim of stimulating the student's mem ory and holding his interest. The book will be found easy enough for the first weeks of German work in high-school and college.
