Unravel the critical history and craft of Judith, the Old English fragment .

This study surveys how scholars have dated the poem and linked it to its manuscript, while unpacking its metre, language, and stylistic features for clear understanding.

This volume examines the fragment in depth, weighing early critics and competing theories. It explains how linguistic and poetic evidence shapes our sense of authorship, date, and literary context, without assuming a single verdict. The approach blends textual analysis with historical context, helping readers see how judgments about Judith fit into the broader history of Old English poetry.

How scholars date Judith using meter, rhyme, and pronunciation clues.
How language choices and stylistic patterns reveal the poem’s formal textures.
How the work compares with Beowulf and other early English poems.
What the fragments tell us about the poet’s craft and the manuscript tradition.

Ideal for readers of medieval literature, Old English poetry, and linguistic history who want a clear, evidence-based overview without heavy speculation.
