This book is the dramatized story of Vladimir Samoilo, a young lieutenant in the Russian army during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-1878. Disguised as a peasant girl under the name of Fatinitza, he is discovered by Count Timofey Kantchuko, a rough general who falls violently in love with him. Vladimir extricates himself from this dilemma, and meets the general's niece, the Princess Lydia lmanovna. Despite being promised to another, Lydia falls for Vladimir in his disguise. Vladimir's true identity is finally revealed, to the general's fury. Complications ensue, but Vladimir and Lydia are eventually united through the ingenuity of an American newspaper correspondent, who also helps the other characters escape. The book combines themes of love, war, and mistaken identity, and provides a glimpse into the complex social and political landscape of 19th-century Russia.
