Excerpt from Progress Report on Irrigation Experiments in Willamette Valley, Oregon
This valley contains perhaps the largest single body of tillable land, outside of the great Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys in California, in the Pacific Coast or Rocky Mountain States. It is also one of the oldest-settled sections of the West a large part of its prairie and bottom land having been in cultivation for more than fifty years. The rainfall during the winter months is very heavy, but during the summer months it is so light as to constitute almost an arid condition in so far as the production of agricultural crops is concerned.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a collection of research on the value of irrigation for increasing agricultural productivity in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The research was done by the US Department of Agriculture Office of Experiment Stations in response to Willamette Valley farmers changing from grain farming to more diversified farming. The Willamette Valley has a mild climate, but the summers are very dry. This book shows how irrigation can supplement the natural rainfall of the region and increase crop yields. The book will be of interest to farmers, agricultural researchers, and anyone interested in the history of agriculture in the Pacific Northwest.
