This book examines the eating habits of young salmon and trout fish in relation to their macroinvertebrate prey in eight Oregon streams. The author compares the composition of macroinvertebrates present in the stream environment to those found in the stomach contents of fish collected from canopied and non-canopied stream sections over three years. The results uncover a significant difference between the profile of macroinvertebrates in the environment and those taken as food items by juvenile salmonids. The percentage of Diptera and Ephemeroptera (flies and mayflies) found in the study was high among both macroinvertebrate samples and the fish stomach contents, suggesting their importance as a food source. Despite the significant differences, there was no major concern regarding the presence or absence of riparian canopy, indicating that non-canopied stream sections are not always necessary to provide adequate preferred food items for young fish.
