This book details the marketing practices surrounding grass and small-seeded legume seeds within the North Central States between 1954 and 1955. Specifically, it analyzes the marketing of alfalfa, red clover, timothy, and other smaller-seeded legume and grass types in the region and the different channels used to get these products from the producer to the end-user. The author describes the existing sales practices for certified and non-certified seeds and the functions performed by wholesale dealers, such as cleaning and packaging, prior to the distribution and sale of the final product. This book compiles data from 59 wholesale grass and legume seed dealers to provide a broad overview of the seed industry during this time, focusing primarily on the methods in which seeds traveled from the farm to the consumer. Changes in the industry, such as increasing demand and regional specialization, are also explored. The study provides insight into the practices of the seed industry during this period, the changes that were occurring within it at the time, and also provides a benchmark against which more recent practices within the industry can be compared.
