Synopsis
This book examines the origins of the kingdoms of the Malay Archipelago. The author combines insights from archaeology, philology, and history to posit that despite unique physical barriers that kept the archipelago disunified, various cultures balanced influences from one another and sometimes fanned out to influence far off lands, such as the influences from Champa to the Philippines and Japan via the Malay Peninsula, or the spread of Old Javanese across the archipelago. The author argues the archipelago's history was shaped by traders and seafarers, so much so that the seas between islands should not be thought of as barriers but rather as thoroughfares that linked archipelagic peoples together.
