These stories offer excellent material either for rapid reading or for grammatical drill. In point of difficulty they are adapted for use toward the end of the first or at the beginning of the second year, and experience in the class-room has shown that the scholar finds them entertaining. Omissions have been made to adapt them better to class-room use, particularly in the second tale, which gains by being pruned. Attention is called to such points of syntax as naturally come up when the paradigms have been once mastered. To lessen the confusion of cross-references, a Grammatical Appendix has been added, which claims no originality, but which tries to state concisely and illustrate more fully than a grammar can always do, the use of voice, mood, tense, auxiliaries, prefixes, etc. To this constant reference is made, and the matter can be memorized and its application be ex tended farther at the discretion of the teacher.
