Synopsis

This book is a fictional exploration of themes including themes of vengeance, class-conflict and pursuit of justice. These play out during the turbulent years of the French Revolution. Robert Landry, the main character, is unjustly imprisoned in the Bastille for 18 years, an experience that hardens his heart and kindles an insatiable desire for retribution. After his release from prison, Robert sets out to avenge the wrongs committed against him using the chaos of the French Revolution as a bloody instrument. Along his path, he confronts and pursues key figures of the aristocracy and, most notably, the Abbe Latour, a major architect of his false imprisonment and corrupt figure within the court of Versailles. Robert's quest for vengeance is ultimately successful, but the personal cost of his actions is substantial and his achievements are shown to be ultimately hollow. This book is an in-depth examination of the human capacity for hate and vengeance, and a subtle meditation on the frequent proximity between good and evil.
