This comprehensive dictionary of vernacular Syriac, as spoken in the Eastern Syrian (Nestorian or Chaldean) Christian communities who live on the borders of Persia and Turkey, is intended as a companion volume to the author's Grammar of the Dialects of Vernacular Syriac, published in 1895. Its entries are derived from the author's own observations, a previously published manuscript vocabulary, and several vernacular manuscripts of the last two centuries. The dictionary covers not only the dialects of several districts, which do not aspirate Tau and Dalath, but also those which do. It also includes many villages of Eastern Syrians in Turkey, the town of Zaldm, and the dialect of the Azerbaijani Jews. In addition to words employed by the more learned but not heard in colloquial speech, the dictionary contains vernacular manuscripts, sermons, and the New Testament, making it an invaluable resource for anyone interested in this lesser-known language.
