The author was an Englishman, who partly from a love of seeing new countries, and part ly from ambition, entered the Dutch service, 'and went out to protect the Colony of Surinam from the incursions of What he calls rebel NE groes; being in fact an independent republic of colored citizens, daily augmented in num bers by runaway slaves.
