Uncover the Bessarabia question through primary documents and a contemporary preface

This collection presents key documents on the 1918 union with Romania, framed by an introductory preface that explains the stakes and the voices involved. It offers firsthand material that sheds light on how events were discussed and contested at the time.

This edition compiles reports, appeals, and administrative orders that illustrate the complex political and social turmoil surrounding Bessarabia’s status. Readers will see how shut doors to discussion, military presence, and shifting authorities shaped the region’s future, from local assemblies to international diplomacy.

Multiple perspectives from political, military, and civic actors in Bessarabia
Context for the union with Romania and the reactions of local populations
Documentation of governance, censorship, and contested authority during occupation
Background on the broader debate about self-determination and Allied decisions

Ideal for readers seeking a documentary glimpse into the period, and for those studying the origins of the postwar arrangement in Eastern Europe.
