Je n'avais pas composé de sermons, car la révolution de 89 m'avait enlevé la cure de saint-merry, que le frère de mon père devait me résigner. Il est pro bable que sans cela la sève de mon cerveau se serait transformée en sermons au lieu de se mouler en lignes cadencées, ce qui m'eût valu un évêché peut - être même un chapeau rouge.
