Synopsis

Excerpt from Burge's Commentaries on Colonial and Foreign Laws Generally, and in Their Conflict With Each Other and With the Law of England, Vol. 2 of 5

IN the present edition this volume and the following one deal with the Law of Persons, which was contained in the first volume of the former edition. The order of the subjects has been slightly changed; the chapters have been freely adapted within their original limits, and new chapters have been added on Adoption, Parental Power, and Alimentary Obligation.

In this volume, as throughout the work, the statements of com parative legislation do not claim to be exhaustive. In view of the mass of new material, it is hoped that each subject will be found to be treated adequately under the heads of the Civil law; the Canon law; the roman-dutch law; the ancient and modern French law; such typical modern systems of foreign law as the Codes of Italy, Spain, Germany, and Switzerland; the laws of the British Dominions based on the Common law, the Civil law, and the Hindu and Muhammadan law in British India; the law of the United States; and private international law. The endeavour has been made to give specific references to authorities in all cases where the point in question seemed of juristic importance or where the scope of the subject did not appear too wide to require them; but it has not been thought necessary as a rule to cite foreign decisions by the names of the parties, especially in the citations from the Journal de Droit International Privé, but only by the name of the country or court, nor to add a table of statutes.
