I wish to review the past briefly, for the benefit of my friends at home and others who have never seen this part of the world, my object being to present a truthful picture of what I have seen and known myself. I do so in the hope that others, younger, stronger, and better than I am, may be induced to come and settle here as missionaries to the heathen or as good colonists.

I shall first endeavour to convey an impression of the appearance of the country and its climate, and describe briefly the vegetable productions, plants, trees, animals, and inhabitants as they have come under my notice.
