La répugnance naturelle qu'avait Cha teaubriand à entreprendre cette oeuvre s'est visiblement évanouie à mesure qu'il l'édifiait. Ce n'est pas dans le dégoût de son sujet, ce n'est pas avec la rancoeur d'un écolier assis devant un pensum qu'on trace des pages comme celles qu'on va lire, mais bien dans la joie de les écrire, dans l'amour des choses que l'on dit, dans la foi en leurimportance. C'est que, n'ayant d'abord vu en ce travail qu'ün fade labeur d'érudition, surtout une condamnation à s'occuper de la vie d'un autre, il y vit bientôt tout autre chose: une occasion de beaux morceaux littéraires, de tableaux émouvants, de conjectures excitantes, de hautes vues générales; mais surtout il y vit il trouva moyen d'y voir une occasion de dire sa propre vie et de clamer sa propre âme. On pourrait même prétendre qu'il n'y vit plus rien d'autre. Et, de fait, cette Vie'ïie Hance' raconte surtout Chateaubriand elle est, au fond, une annexe des Mémoires d'outrejoinbe et de René.
