Mr. Sabin was an entbusiastic student of A mericana, and l was soon instilled witb tbe same feeling. My first efiorts were not direéted to tbe purcbasc of rarities so mucb as to early local bistortes of towns, accounts of Indian figbts, and otber incidents of special interest. But it is natural to work back to first principles, and so I found myself striving more and more every year to secure ibe original sources of our knowledge of tbe dis covery and early bistory of tbc country. Tbis made me more or less familiar witb tbe works issued in tbe early part of tbs sixteentb century and tbs latter part of tbc fifteentb. 'iben I became impressed witb tbe wonderful beauty of tbese volumes.
