Synopsis

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a detailed analysis of the rhetorical theories of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato and Roman orator and philosopher Cicero. The author provides a comprehensive examination of the relationship between these two influential thinkers and their impact on the development of Western rhetoric. By comparing and contrasting Plato's and Cicero's ideas on eloquence, argumentation, and the role of the orator, the author sheds light on the evolution of rhetorical thought from ancient Greece to the Roman Republic. The book explores the influence of each thinker's philosophical and political beliefs on their rhetorical theories, and examines how these theories were shaped by the cultural and historical contexts in which they were developed. Through a meticulous examination of their writings, the author draws out the similarities and differences between Plato and Cicero's perspectives. The discussion delves into Plato's emphasis on the ethical dimension of rhetoric and his belief in the orator's responsibility to use their powers for the good of society. Cicero's focus on the practical aspects of oratory and his view of rhetoric as a tool for political success are also explored. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of rhetoric, ancient philosophy, or the development of political thought. It offers a nuanced understanding of the contributions of Plato and Cicero to the field and provides insights into the enduring legacy of their rhetorical ideas.
