This book is an edition of Orvar-Odd's saga, a medieval Icelandic text which presents a literary version of the adventures of Orvar-Odd, a legendary hero who lived during the Viking Age. Composed in the 13th century and drawing on sources from the 11th and 12th centuries, this text is a valuable source of insight into the lives and beliefs of the people of this period. The saga relates how Oddr, the exiled son of a Norse chieftain, grows up in relative obscurity until a soothsayer foretells that he will meet his end in the jaws of a serpent which will emerge from the skull of his horse, Faxi. Oddr's efforts to avoid this fate, including killing the horse and burying its head deep in the earth, prove futile, and he eventually dies from the bite of a serpent as the soothsayer foretold. The author of this edition has provided an introduction, notes, and a glossary to assist the reader in understanding the historical and literary context of the saga and the meaning of unfamiliar terms.
