This book, the latest installment in the ongoing Illustrated Catalogue of Insects of New York State series, adds another piece to the puzzle of documenting the incredible range of insects in the state. This time, the team focuses on the moths and butterflies – grouping the information with classic illustrations of the species, many of which are presented here in breathtaking color, and including a beautiful accompanying plate offering life-sized views of these insects. This is more than a showcase, however. The author, a noted state entomologist, provides a comprehensive view of their habits, habitats and the economic impact of their presence, drawing directly from research done in the field. His writing is well-informed but never dry, and as such offers a model of scholarship that will prove useful to fellow researchers and the interested public alike.
