The author, a distinguished Portuguese mathematician, led this work in 1788. At the time, Portugal lacked a precise map, which was essential for the sound management of its territory. The author first measured a baseline between Buarcos and Monte Redondo, and later, using a network of triangles, determined the length of the meridian arc that crosses Portugal from the southernmost point, Cape of Saint Vincent, to the northernmost point, Serra do Gerez. To carry out these operations, the author journeyed across Portugal's rugged terrain and faced numerous challenges, including the lack of proper roads. The work conducted by the author and his team had a profound impact on the development of cartography in Portugal, allowing for the creation of the first accurate and complete map of the country, which has served as a foundation for all subsequent cartographic endeavors in Portugal.
