La littérature italienne n'est pas sans doute la seule littérature moderne que Molière ait mise à contribution. Sans parler de notre vieux fonds français qui lui fut d'une grande ressource, il y a encore le théâtre espagnol qu il ne négligea point. Il possédait, d'après l'inventaire, malheureuse ment trop laconique, qui fut dressé de ses livres après son décès, deux cent quarante volumes de comédies françaises, italiennes et espagnoles. Les pieces espagnoles, autant qu'on peut le conjectu rer, ne devaient pas figurer dans ce chiffre pour une quantité égale à celle des pièces italiennes; mais il est certain qu il y avait là un certain nombre de tomes de L0pe de Vega, de Moreto, de Calderon,. Et d'autres écrivains espagnols. On n'a pas à crain.
