Excerpt from An Exposition Upon the Epistle to the Colossians: Being the Substance of Near Seven Years Week-Day Sermons
The proem is intended to win attention and affection, and stands of two parts - the salutation and the preface. The salutation is contained in the two first verses, and the preface in the third verse and those that follow to the twelfth.
In the salutation three things are to be observed first, The persons saluting; secondly, The persons saluted thirdly, The form of the salutation itself.
