Au fond de la baie de Cattaro, entre l'Albanie et l'Herzegovine, s'élève un groupe d'âpres montagnes dominant toute la contrée environnante. Ce groupe a reçu de ses habitants le nom slave de Tsernogora. c'est-à-dire de montagne noire, traduit par les Grecs en Mavro-Vouni, par les Turcs en Kara-Dagh, par les Albanais en Mal-Esija, et par les Vénitiens en Monténégro; c'est sous cette dernière appellation qu'il est le plus généralement connu dans l'Occident. Au sein de ces montagnes habite une population peu nombreuse, mais brave et aguerrie, longtemps oubliée de l'Europe, et qui, depuis quelques années, attire ses regards et son intérêt.

About the Author

Francois Lenormant was born in Paris in 1835, the son of Charles Lenormant (1802-1859), and followed in his father's footsteps as an archaeologist and classical historian. He was a member of several learned societies, acting as Deputy Librarian of L'Institut de France and later being elected a member of L'Academie Francaise. Lenormant died in 1883.
