Explore Exeter’s ancient parish churches and the city’s living history

This carefully researched guide gathers the history, fabric, and notable features of 33 churches in and around Exeter, from pre-Conquest origins to modern times. Rich with notes from local records and photographs, it offers a window into how each building reflects the city’s evolving story and its people.

Two scoped, practical sections frame the work: an Introduction to the Deanery of Christianity and a guided tour of individual churches, supported by plates and illustrations that bring stonework, fonts, and architectural details to life. The volume also records restorations and changes across the centuries, helping readers see what remains of earlier eras in today’s streets.
What you’ll experience

A concise history of Exeter’s church buildings, from early foundations to later rebuilds
Insights into how British and Saxon influences shape church dedications and town layout
Descriptions of notable features, monuments, and armorial bearings illustrated in plates
Context for restorations and their impact on how these churches look today

Ideal for readers of local history, architecture enthusiasts, genealogists, and anyone curious about how a city’s sacred spaces tell its past.
