This book, set in 1898, follows 28-year-old Franz König, a young German engineer who travels to Cuba. He is tasked with overseeing construction of a railroad. His experiences there expose him to the realities of war, love, and the Cuban fight for independence. Early on, he befriends Robert Berthold, a wealthy young German industrialist who, like Franz, is enthusiastic about Cuba's independence movement. The two become engaged in anti-Spanish conspiracy and meet with rebel leaders who are fighting for their country's freedom. The experiences of the characters in this book shed light on the complex relationship between Cuba and Spain and the many facets of human nature in the face of war and political upheaval.
