Per oltre 50 chilometri dalla sua origine il Panaro conserva il letto ghiaioso; soltanto in vicinanza di Modena perde il suo carattere torrentizio e comincia ad essere arginato, quando non corre fra sponde alte ed incassate. Al disotto di Bom porto comincia ad essere navigabile per barche di piccola portata e per un corso' di circa 45 chilometri. Dopo aver toccato il paese di Finale, entra in provincia di Ferrara passa per Bondeno e sbocca in Po alla Stellata. Il bacino idrografico del Panaro e complessivamente valutato in oltre 1100 chilometri quadrati ed il corso totale del fiume dal Lago Santo alla Stellata è di circa 148 chilometri.
