This book is a study of the rapidly changing world of computers and communications and the social and economic changes it is spawning. As the author points out, we have already entered a new environment, a world of computer chips, optical fibers, and software; a new global marketplace of networks and telecommunications services that is transforming the way we work, live, and play. The author calls this new world "cyberspace"—a term coined in science fiction but now finding its way into common usage as the name for what may well be the most important new realm of human experience. The author says that one of the most important things that is happening as a result of the computer revolution is that we are moving from a world of "information scarcity" to a world of "information abundance". This is a major change, with profound implications for our lives and for the way our society is organized. In this new information-rich environment, the author says, we will need to develop new ways of thinking about information and knowledge. We will need to learn how to navigate through the vast sea of information that is now available to us, and we will need to develop new ways of evaluating and using information.
