Synopsis

Ripoll begins by tracing the history of his family's shoemaking business, located in the small town of Tortosa. He details the role that shoemaking played in the culture and economy of the town, using the shoemaker as a lens through which to examine the social and economic development of the region. Ripoll then recounts his family's journey to Barcelona, and his uncle's establishment of the shoemaking workshop within the confines of his own home. He concludes by recounting his own role in the family business, from his early apprenticeship to the establishment of his own factory and retail outlets. The book is a rich description and analysis of family relations and domestic economy.
