Synopsis
This book is a collection of three stage plays: "The Flatterer" a comedy in five acts, "The Shepherds and the Princess" a comedy in five acts and "The Village Soothsayer" a pastoral comedy in one act. Each play is written in a different traditional style of French theatre including, traditional Alexandrine verse, free verse and prose. The plays are written in the style of the Enlightenment, focusing on themes of logic, reason, nature, and morality, challenging the traditional norms and mores of the 17th century. They touch on important and insightful ideas such as the dangers of flattery, the power of love, the importance of honesty, and the enduring presence of societal pressures. The author, a prominent and influential figure of the Enlightenment, uses these plays to convey his philosophical ideas and encourage his audience to critically examine the world around them.
