Tre diverse epoche si osservano, daproîchè la reli gione cristiana si sparse nel mondo, nel e correlazioni fra il sacerdozio, e il principato: la prima si è quella in cui essendo ancora il numero dei fedeli scarso, nè avendo fra di loro altro vincolo che quello della fede, isuoì muustri mostravano molta condiscendenza verso coloro che reggevano le cose temporali, e, della san tità contenti, poco si curavano dei beni di questo mondo, nè altra ambizione avevano se non quella di vivere virtuosamente e'di convertire chiamando nuove anime all' ovile di Cristo. I convertiti poi lasciavano intieramente al governo del Principe, nè mai venne loro in pensiero o di turbare o di usurpare le ope razioni e le ragioni del principato. Ciò si osaerwò sotto gl'împer&torì pagani, ciò ancora sotto i primi imperatori cristiani. Nel medesimo tempo non era le cito ai cherîci dì possede're beni stabilì ed altre ren dite se non con l' approvazione e consenso del Prin cipe, quel modo stesso in cui gii antichi collegi nella religione dei gentili in Roma possedere non po tevano, se non con l'assenso dell'autorità sovrana. Qntest'epoca fu la prima, e consisteva nella libertà del prìnvìpato rispetto al sacerdozio: liberi gli uni Santi e dix'înteressati gli altri.
