Synopsis
This book is a monastic rule of an order of nuns, compiled in the 17th century. The 40 constitutions codify the behaviors and practices of the nuns. Obedience to God, as manifested in obedience to the Mother Superior and community, is emphasized and disobedience, from the smallest through blasphemous speech, is described along with its appropriate penance. Daily life, from mealtimes, prayers to be said, writing letters, recreation, and all aspects of the nuns' lives are prescribed. Of particular interest are the medical provisions: that all nuns are to fast regularly, and are specifically to abstain from eating meat, and that the nuns are encouraged to eat meat substitutes such as eggs and cheese. This rule provides an insight into the lives and expectations of Catholic nuns in the era following the Council of Trent and up to the present day.
