Benoît XIV, dont l'érudition a touché magistralement à tant de questions ecclésiastiques, s'occupa d'une nouvelle réforme du Bréviaire. Sur son ordre, Fabio Danzetta lui soumit à cet égard des remarques qui ne remplissaient pas moins de quatre gros volumes; de plus, il institua en 1741 une commission de prélats et de théologiens, dont les laborieuses discussions durèrent près de sept ans en 1747 elle avait mené à terme un projet complet de nouveau Bré viaire. On ignore absolument pourquoi Benoît XIV, qui avait suivi avec le plus grand intérèt cette longue élabora tion, ne donna aucune suite à son idée de réforme. Les travaux préparatoires existent encore à Rome, à la biblio thèque Corsini, et j'en ai la table, obligeamment dressée par M. L'abbé Vernet.
