This book unravels the life and legacy of Hincmar, the archbishop who shaped the ecclesiastical and political landscape of 9th-century France. As an influential figure amidst Carolingian power struggles, he played a pivotal role in shaping the relationship between church and state during a time of great political and religious upheaval. The author meticulously presents Hincmar's involvement in major historical events, including royal coronations, church councils, and theological controversies of his time. Through a wealth of primary source analysis, this book delves into the intricacies of Hincmar's thought, examining his contributions to canon law, liturgy, and political theory. Ultimately, it sheds light on Hincmar's enduring impact on the development of the medieval church and the broader intellectual climate of the early Middle Ages.
