Excerpt from Le Bucoliche, Vol. 1: Ecloghe I-V
Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book by Salvatore Cognetti de Martiis is a richly detailed study of the Eclogues by the ancient Roman poet Virgil. Emerging in the first century BCE, these exquisite early poems by Virgil are analysed in light of historical, social, and literary context. Examining the Eclogues' connection to earlier Greek poetry, particularly the work of Theocritus, Cognetti de Martiis delves into their manifold topics to uncover layers of meaning. Central to the argument is a consideration of how the poet's experiences with influential Roman political figures of his time, such as Pollio and Augustus, found subtle expression in the Eclogues. Various influential interpretations and theories are examined, including the texts' chronological evolution and their supposed allegorical meanings. Cognetti de Martiis presents his own interpretations of the Eclogues, offering a significant contribution to the understanding of their literary and historical significance.
