This book is a record of the author's struggle to protect the integrity of the surgical facilities at Kiel University Hospital, where the author was the Director of the Surgical Clinic. In the late 1800s, plans were underway to create a new medical clinic on the existing site of the surgical clinic and staff housing. This would have encroached on the surgical clinic's space and compromised its ability to effectively train students and provide patient care. The author argues that this plan was not in the best interest of the university or its medical students and that existing facilities were adequate to meet current and future needs. The author's efforts to preserve the surgical clinic reveal the complexities and challenges of managing a large teaching hospital and balancing the needs of different medical departments while working within the constraints of budgets and physical space.
