Synopsis
This classic Italian text examines Italy's path towards political unity in the second half of the 1800s. At the time of this book's writing in 1860, Italy's unification was not yet complete; and the author, a supporter of King Victor Emmanuel II, discusses the challenges and opportunities of the Risorgimento. The author analyzes the role of the major European powers, the strengths and weaknesses of the Italian military, and the diplomatic challenges posed by the Papacy and the Duchy of Austria. The book concludes that, in order for Italy to fully achieve its potential and expel all foreign influence, the Papal States, the cities of Venice and Rome, and the various Italian duchies would need to be unified under the rule of King Victor Emmanuel. The author's analysis has proven prescient, as Italy did unify under Victor Emmanuel a decade later, in 1871. This book provides valuable insight into Italian history and is highly recommended for readers interested in 19th-century Europe.
