The Vercelli Gospels are of special importance to all Biblical students. This manuscript named (62) gives what is considered to be the oldest extant Latin copy of the Four Gospels, and is consequently the first of what are known as the European versions of the four Evangelists. The order of the Gospels in (a) is that of the oldest Latin Mss. Namely: Matthew, John, Luke and Mark. The Codex, written in fine regular uncials with very few corrections, has been usually assigned to the 4th century, and the tra dition, recorded as early as the 8th century, is that the manuscript belonged to, if indeed it was not actually written by, St. Eusebius of. Vercelli, who died in A. D. 371.
