A remarkable portrait of a legendary soldier, spanning India, Afghanistan, and South Africa.

This biography follows a life built on steady work, decisive leadership, and a passion for military organization.

Roberts forged his path from early days in India to becoming a central figure in the Kabul-Kandahar campaign. He led a field force of about 10,000 soldiers with 18 guns, organized for speed and supply. The Kabul-to-Kandahar march covered 313 miles in 23 days, a feat achieved despite harsh conditions and fever no doubt testing leadership. The subsequent Kandahar battle crushed Afghan forces and solidified his reputation, paving the way for his later role as commander-in-chief in India and a long, influential career across the British Empire’s campaigns.
