Synopsis

This book relates the plight of the inhabitants of a remote village in 16th century Slovenia. Local legend has it that the village is cursed by witches, and the superstitious residents are terrorized and wracked with fear. In particular, Siofina, the innocent daughter of Balentin and Brigita Dotic is struck by a mysterious illness which leave her near death. In an act of desperation, her parents call upon a mysterious old woman who is rumored to be a witch. The old woman heals Siofina and proceeds to tell the family that she is under the protection of powerful forces and promises them good fortune. But a guest staying at the Dotich household, Herr Roietan Zweiler, is deeply suspicious of the old woman and becomes determined to unmask her. The author explores the clash between tradition and superstition as the old ways of the village and its inhabitants are brought into stark contrast with the increasingly modern, progressive, and skeptical views of the outside world. This captivating tale weaves together themes of superstition, healing, revenge, and the clash between the old and the new, providing valuable insights into the nature of belief and the changing social landscape of 16th century Slovenia.
