This book introduces a computer program called ZIP that aids home-dwellers and professionals in various fields to estimate the economic levels of insulation for residential houses in the United States. Developed in response to the US Department of Energy's Insulation Fact Sheet, ZIP can be used for both new and pre-existing houses and can calculate estimates for attic floors, exterior walls, floors over crawlspaces, crawl space walls, and both shallow and deep basement walls. Drawing on national data and local price information, ZIP is able to provide uniquely tailored information depending on the user's location within the US. The author acknowledges the impact of insulation levels on heating and cooling costs, and ZIP has been designed to account for factors such as the type of heating and cooling systems used, ductwork specifications and even details such as the approximate number of stories in a house. By understanding the interplay between all these variables, the book and its companion ZIP program allow users to make more informed decisions when it comes to the insulation of their homes.
