Ce sont ces considérations, d'importance essentielle à mon gré, qui ont déterminé le plan et le caractère du présent livre. Il est moins un manuel qu'une histoire de l'art byzantin. Assurément on y trouvera, et sans peine, les renseignements pratiques que le lecteur attend légitimement d'un livre qui s'intitule manuel; on les trouvera seulement groupés selon l'ordre historique plutôt que selon l'ordre systématique. Et aussi bien est - il plus instructif peut - être et. À mon sens, plus scientifique, de présenter, par exemple, dans son développe ment chronologique, l'histoire de l'architecture byzantine que d'analyser dans un même chapitre, sans souci des temps, les formes diverses et les partis dili'érents de la construction. Il sera aisé à celui qui s'intéresse plus spécialement aux monu ments de la miniature, de l'ivoirerie ou de l'émaillerie de retrouver, dans chacune des parties de ce livre, les chapitres particuliers consacrés à ces diverses branches de l'art. Il eût été déplorable, à mon avis, en étudiant sous une rubrique unique l'ensemble des manuscrits illustrés ou des ivoires ou des émaux byzantins, de supprimer le lien qui unit ces monu ments au développement général de l'art. Au système des monographies spéciales, relatives à telle ou telle catégorie d'ouvrages d'art, volontairement on a préféré une expo_sition plus historique, où apparaîtra, dans l'unité de son harmonieux développement, l'art byzantin aux différentes époques de sa vie. Mais le lecteur curieux de ces monographies spéciales les rencontrera aisément à la place qu'elles occupent dans cha cune des sections de l'ouvrage, et il pourra, s'il lui plaît, les consulter en se dispensant de lire tout le reste.
