L' argomento di questo discorso è dunque una disamina di tutti i pregiudizi del volgo friulano intorno ad esseri favolosi, a poteri arcani, ad arti recondite, a predizioni, e a tutto che in somma e fuori delle leggi di natura, che conosciamo. Si fatto patrimonio d' errori superstiziosi, retaggio degli avi, non è me schino: ma non per ciò e a credersi, che il tema, limitandosi al Friuli, implichi un' Opinione ad esso sfavorevole, quasi fosse superstizioso in ispecial modo. Ritengo invece, che, per essere in un remoto lembo d'italia, prossimo a genti 'slave, inchinate al fantastico e adolescenti di civiltà, di cui una nel suo grembo ricovra; e, per essere in gran parte su' monti, ove l'antico più serbasi, e quasi tutto alieno da' trafiîci, che son pure mezzi di progresso e di lumi, abbia meno superstizioni di quelle gli si potrebbono attribuire, gli s' attribuirono ed attribuiscono. Così che, ed i lettori se li' avvedranno, poche ne ha, che non sieno comuni alle contermini provincie, a tutta Italia, a Cristianità, anzi ad Europa; ed alcune eziandio all'umanità antica e moderna.
