Synopsis
This book provides an analysis of the climate of Alaska's southern coast. Its aim is to understand the climate of this region, with a view of further investigating climate's potential influence on biological phenomena, and to provide background for more specific studies. The author uses climate data from the period 1957 -71 to analyze climatic variables and periods of record. The analysis employed principal component analysis and other statistical methods to identify significant factors accounting for a large percentage of the total variance, with the resulting data used to group climatically similar stations. As well as providing a detailed overview of current climate patterns in the region, the book discusses broader trends in temperature and precipitation, and the climatic and geological factors that have influenced the diversity of plant and animal life.
