The author analyzed this edict and places it in the context of Roman law on the crime of high treason. The edict was also analyzed together with the corresponding excerpt from the so-called "Theodosian Code" and a fragment of the emperor Justinianâs âDigestâ in order to determine the reasons why the edict was established, which resulted in a compelling historical analysis. Besides its historical and legal significance, the analysis of the edict also shows that Constantine's edict is notable for its punitive harshness, which was typical for the late period of Roman law. Thus, this book is of great interest for anyone interested in the development of late Roman law, the history of Roman criminal law, and particularly the legal history of the crime of high treason.
