Excerpt from Marketing California Raisins<br/><br/>The Thompson seedless variety, originally produced in England, was first grown in Sutter County, Calif., in 1872. It is said that the entire California acreage of Thompson seedless grapes can be traced back to one original Sutter County grapevine. Because it lacked seeds, the Thompson grape made an excellent raisin, and cultivation soon spread to the San Joaquin Valley.
