Wenn zwei Stoffe A und B sich bei einer bestimmten Temperatur verbinden, und diese Verbindung bei einer höheren Temperatur zerfällt, so wird es stets eine Zwischentemperatur geben, bei welcher Verbindung und Zerfall gleichzeitig statt finden können. Daraus geht folglich hervor, dass A und B sich nur partiell verbinden, oder AB sich nur partiell zersetzt, und man wird gleichzeitig die drei Stoffe A, B und AB haben. Nach Deville heisst diese Erscheinung Dissociation.
