Le plan que j'avais adopté n'a pas varié; et c'est encore en suivant l'ordre alphabétique, que les amateurs pourront connaitre ce que j'ai pu découvrir sur certains artisans.
Il ne} m'est pas permis de dire qu'il n'y a plus rien a trouver maintenant; car, en matière de recherches historiques, il y a toujours du nouveau et la voie reste constamment ouverte aux travailleurs; mais, je mets au jour beau coup de documents encore inédits, et d'une authenticité indiscutable.
Pour les relieurs du moyen âge, qui ont produit ces estampages a froid d'un si grand caractère, j'ai beaucoup glané dans l'inventaire historique et archéologique de Gand; quant aux reliures fabriquées dans des couvents ou dans des abbayes, j'aurais pu les classer sous l'appellation générale de reliures monastiques, mais j'ai pensé, chaque fois qu'il m'a été possible de découvrir des noms de praticiens (ce qu'on rencontre rarement à cette époque), ou bien des détails curieux sur le monastère où le travail avait été exécuté, que je devais faire profiter le lecteur de mes découvertes.
